There is something timeless about classic cross-country skiing. Classic Line is designed for complete beginners, combining expert coaching, structured learning and scenic daily journeys that steadily build confidence, rhythm and technique whilst introducing guests to the beauty of the Engadine Valley.

Your home for the week is Hotel Schweizerhof, a refined retreat in the heart of Sils Maria. Elegant accommodation, warm hospitality and excellent dining create a welcoming atmosphere, while the village setting provides the perfect base from which to relax and enjoy alpine winter life.

The Engadine Valley offers some of Switzerland's finest beginner-friendly cross-country skiing. Wide valley trails, frozen lakes and gentle forest routes combine with spectacular mountain scenery to create an inspiring environment for learning, exploration and discovering the unique appeal of Nordic skiing.

Morning Session (09:00 – 11:00) 

Fundamental classic skiing coaching designed specifically for beginner skiers within a calm and supportive environment. 

Afternoon Session (14:00 – 16:00) 

Gentle scenic skiing journeys across valley trails, frozen lakes, and forest routes — linking movements naturally through exploration and relaxed progression. 

Evening 

Wellness, alpine dining, and relaxed evenings enjoying the elegant atmosphere of Sils Maria and the wider Engadine Valley. 

Classic Line - Learn to Classic Ski Itinerary

Your guide will meet you in the arrivals hall at Zürich Airport, where the group transfer will depart at 15:00. The journey to Sils Maria takes approximately 3 hours. Guests unable to join the group transfer may travel independently to St. Moritz by train, where collection can be arranged. Please contact us before booking if you would like guidance on alternative travel options.  

Arrive in the beautiful Engadine Valley and settle into the elegant surroundings of Hotel Schweizerhof in the heart of Sils Maria. Take time to explore the village, enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, or relax before meeting your fellow guests.  

This evening, join your Wildtrack Nordic hosts for a welcome briefing and dinner as we introduce the week ahead.  

Each day begins with simple coaching sessions focused on balance, movement, glide, and control. Using easy-to-follow exercises, you'll build confidence and develop the foundations of classic skiing.  

As the week progresses, you'll link these skills together on gentle, groomed trails. Short journeys provide opportunities to practise techniques in a relaxed and supportive environment.  

By the end of the week, you'll be skiing comfortably on a variety of beginner-friendly terrain, with the confidence and skills to continue your cross-country skiing journey.  

The highlight of the week brings together everything you have learned in a memorable journey through the beautiful Engadine Valley. 

Setting out from Sils Maria, you'll follow gentle, well-groomed trails that form part of the famous route used by the Engadin Ski Marathon. The beginner-friendly terrain allows you to enjoy the rhythm of classic skiing whilst taking in some of the region's most spectacular winter scenery. 

The route passes across frozen lakes, through snow-covered forests and alongside traditional Engadine villages, showcasing why the area is one of Europe's most celebrated cross-country skiing destinations. 

Drawing together the skills developed throughout the week, you'll ski with greater confidence and independence than when you arrived, finishing your holiday with a rewarding sense of achievement and lasting memories of the Engadine Valley. 

The group departure transfer will leave Hotel Schweizerhof at 07:00, arriving at Zürich Airport at approximately 10:00. Guests travelling independently via St. Moritz should speak with their guide regarding departure arrangements.  

Enjoy a final breakfast before beginning your journey home.

For Wildtrack guests, Sils Maria is a true haven for Nordic skiing, with access to over 220km of beautifully prepared trails winding through forests, across frozen lakes and throughout the spectacular Engadine Valley. The village also sits directly on the route of the world-famous Engadin Ski Marathon, adding to the region’s rich skiing heritage.

Dining celebrates regional Swiss cuisine and Alpine flavours, with fresh local ingredients and seasonal dishes reflecting the traditions of the Engadine region. The welcoming restaurant atmosphere provides the perfect setting to relax and refuel after active days outdoors.

Useful Trip Information

The meeting point for your holiday is Zurich Airport, Switzerland, a major international airport with direct connections from destinations across Europe, the USA and beyond. We are pleased to offer a bespoke transfer service, with your guide for the week meeting you in the arrivals hall upon arrival. 

On arrival day, your transfer from the airport will depart at 15:00. On departure day, we will return you to Zurich Airport by 10:00, requiring departure from the hotel at 07:00. 

Please contact your guide as soon as possible if your flight is delayed. 

From January to March, Sils Maria in the Engadine Valley experiences classic alpine winter conditions with cold temperatures, reliable snowfall and excellent cross-country skiing conditions. January is typically the coldest month, with average temperatures ranging from approximately -12°C to 2°C (10°F to 36°F).

February remains consistently snowy with crisp winter days and stable snow conditions, while March brings slightly milder temperatures and longer daylight hours. Despite the first signs of spring arriving, snow conditions often remain excellent, helped by the altitude of the Engadine Valley and the region’s dry mountain climate. 

Breakfast is served buffet style, offering a generous selection of hot and cold options and the opportunity to prepare a packed lunch for your day on the trails. Evening meals are served as a three-course set menu, featuring a combination of regional specialities and international cuisine, with vegetarian and vegan options available.

Most dietary requirements can be catered for, including gluten-free, dairy-free, nut allergies, shellfish allergies and egg-free diets. Please advise us at the time of booking so arrangements can be made with the hotel. Drinks with evening meals are not included and can be purchased separately. Any additional snacks or refreshments during the day are at your own expense 

Activity level: Leisurely

Low pace, low pressure, but still physically active.

Our Leisurely holidays are ideal for beginners and those seeking a relaxed introduction to cross-country skiing. Days are taken at an unhurried pace, with regular coaching, frequent breaks and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Whilst these holidays place fewer physical demands on guests than our other experiences, cross-country skiing remains an active sport and you should expect to spend several hours on snow each day.

Skiing experience: Beginner

No previous experience required.

Beginner holidays are designed for guests who are completely new to cross-country skiing or have very limited experience. You will learn the fundamental techniques from the ground up, including balance, movement, climbing, descending, stopping and turning, within a relaxed and supportive coaching environment.

Luggage 

We kindly ask that you travel with a maximum of 1 piece of hold luggage and 2 pieces of hand luggage, as storage space in the transfer vehicle is limited. When packing for a winter holiday in the mountains, it is important to bring suitable clothing and equipment to ensure you remain comfortable in changing weather and snow conditions. 

 Ski Equipment 

We will provide skis, boots and poles selected according to your height, weight, shoe size and technical ability, ensuring equipment is matched appropriately for comfort, performance and enjoyment throughout your holiday. 

 Personal Equipment to Bring 

Please ensure you bring the following items for comfort during your holiday: 

  • Rucksack – A 15–20 litre day pack with waist and chest straps, suitable for carrying water, snacks and additional warm or waterproof clothing while out on the trails. 

  • 1 litre water container – Please note that hydration system tubes can often freeze in winter conditions, so a standard water bottle or insulated container is recommended. 

Additional items 

Sunscreen, sunglasses, small thermos for hot drinks, head torch and footwear suitable for icy conditions 

General Clothing 

We recommend bringing suitable winter clothing to ensure you remain comfortable in changing mountain and skiing conditions: 

  • Jackets: Waterproof jacket, fleece or windproof gilet/waistcoat, and a down or insulated jacket (or an additional warm outer layer). 

  • Trousers: Nordic ski trousers that are lightweight, windproof, warm and ideally form fitting. Waterproof trousers are optional for additional protection. 

  • Tops: Long-sleeved thermal base layer and a lightweight long-sleeved fleece or mid-layer. 

  • Accessories: Two pairs of gloves (one lightweight and one insulated), over-mittens for colder days if desired, a warm hat, headband or buff/scarf, and medium-thickness socks. 

Your insurance responsibilities 

These are described in detail within the Insurance Information. As an overview you must have adequate insurance that covers you for: 

  • Medical expenses and repatriation in the event of medical need  

  • Mountain Rescue, apart from Norway where it is free  

  • Cancellation or curtailment of arrangements as a result of circumstances outside of your control (including accident or illness and inability to travel for other reasons)  

  • Personal accident risks, covering injury, illness or death 

  • Personal liability  

  • Personal effects and money  

You must provide us with the name of your travel insurer, policy number and insurer’s emergency contact number 6 weeks before your holiday by updating the information in your account, which can be accessed via the members area of the website. 

You should purchase insurance at the time of booking to protect payments made towards a trip that does not take place for any reason. 

Our insurance responsibilities 

Should Wildtrack Nordic become insolvent or cease to trade, your initial deposit and any other monies paid towards your trip are fully protected. Details of the policy and underwriter are included in the Insurance Information document. 

Wildtrack Nordic does not have any responsibility to insure: 

  • Your flights and any other travel apart from the free shuttle from and to the airport as part of your trip 

  • Your belongings 

  • Your equipment, if you are using your own 

The requirements for your official documentation can be found at Clause 16 of our Booking Terms and Conditions, but in summary:  

  • Passports: you will need a valid passport; many countries require 6+ months’ validity beyond your return date  

  • Visas: you will need to confirm the requirements early and ensure you have at least one blank page in your passport
