Arctic Beginnings

There is a moment in classic cross-country skiing when tentative first steps settle into the tracks and begin to flow. Ylläs Nordic Flow – Classic Beginner is designed for complete beginners who want to learn in a welcoming and supportive small-group environment. Combining carefully structured coaching with scenic daily journeys, the week develops balance, control, rhythm and confidence—turning new skills into relaxed and rewarding skiing.

Accommodation is based at Ylläsrinne Deluxe, where contemporary Nordic comfort meets the peaceful beauty of Finnish Lapland. The hotel’s distinctive Aurora Rooms feature panoramic windows overlooking the Arctic landscape, while excellent dining, sauna facilities and access to the surrounding trail network create an exceptional base for the week.

The Ylläs region provides a wonderful setting in which to begin, with hundreds of kilometres of beautifully prepared trails winding through snow-covered forests, open fells and remote wilderness landscapes. Carefully selected gentle routes allow new skiers to progress without pressure, while each day’s journey reaches a little further into the landscape. Reliable snow, beautifully maintained tracks and unforgettable Arctic scenery make Ylläs one of Finland’s most inspiring places to discover classic cross-country skiing.

Itinerary

A Typical Day

Itineraries are subject to change according to weather, snow conditions and the needs of the group.

Morning Session (09:00–11:00)
Carefully structured classic skiing sessions introducing balance, posture, kick and glide, pole use and confident movement across gentle terrain.

Afternoon Session (14:00–16:00)
Relaxed, scenic journeys along beautifully prepared trails through snow-covered forests and open fell landscapes—allowing new skills to settle naturally while confidence and distance gradually develop.

Evening
Time to relax and recover with a sauna, refined dining and the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of a Lapland winter evening from the comfort of Ylläsrinne’s warm and welcoming bar.

Nordic Flow- Learn to Classic Ski Itinerary

Your guide will meet you in the arrivals hall at Kittilä Airport, where the group transfer will depart at 16:00. The journey to Ylläsrinne takes approximately 45 minutes. Guests travelling outside the recommended transfer window may be able to arrange alternative transfers at additional cost. Please contact us before booking flights if you would like guidance on suitable travel options.  

  Arrive in Finnish Lapland and settle into the comfortable surroundings of Ylläsrinne. Surrounded by forests and Arctic fells, it is the perfect setting to begin your Nordic skiing adventure.  

This evening, enjoy a welcome briefing and dinner as we introduce the week ahead and the terrain you will explore throughout your stay.  

Each day combines carefully structured coaching with enjoyable skiing journeys designed to build your classic technique from the ground up. Sessions focus on balance, posture, kick and glide, poling and controlled movement, helping you feel increasingly comfortable in the tracks.

As the week progresses, you’ll apply these skills across a variety of gentle terrain, learning to climb, descend and manage changing gradients with greater confidence. Coaching is carefully paced, with time to practise and consolidate each new movement.

By the end of the week, you’ll be linking techniques more naturally, skiing with greater rhythm and control, and enjoying longer journeys through Lapland’s peaceful winter landscape.

The final day links together some of the most enjoyable classic skiing terrain in Finnish Lapland. Connecting trails between Äkäslompolo, Kesänkijärvi, and Ylläsjärvi, the route allows guests to enjoy long sections of continuous skiing through one of Europe's finest trail networks.  

Flowing terrain, expansive views, and beautifully prepared trails create the perfect opportunity to experience the rhythm and efficiency developed throughout the week.  

 

The group departure transfer will leave Ylläsrinne at 08:15, arriving at Kittilä Airport at approximately 09:00. Guests travelling outside the recommended transfer window may be able to arrange alternative transfers at additional cost. Please enquire in advance for further information.

Guests are exceptionally well catered for throughout their stay on a full-board basis. Breakfast is served each morning with a generous selection of options to prepare you for a day on the trails. Lunches are hearty and satisfying, while evening meals are served as a carefully prepared three-course experience, providing a welcoming and rewarding end to each day of skiing and Arctic adventure. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, and most dietary requirements can be catered for. Please advise us at the time of booking so arrangements can be made with the hotel. Drinks are not included and can be purchased separately.

Rooms feature specially designed viewing windows, offering the opportunity to admire Arctic night skies from the comfort of your room and, with a little luck, experience the magic of the Northern Lights overhead. 

Solo travellers are very welcome at Ylläsrinne Deluxe and are accommodated in comfortable standard single rooms. Please note that single occupancy is not available in the Aurora Superior Rooms. Holiday prices are automatically adjusted to reflect your selected room option during the booking process.

Useful Trip Information

The meeting point for your holiday is Kittilä Airport, Finland, the main gateway to Finnish Lapland with direct seasonal connections from destinations across Europe and convenient access to the Ylläs region. We are pleased to offer a bespoke transfer service, with your guide for the week meeting you in the arrivals hall upon arrival. 

On arrival day, your transfer from the airport will depart at 16:00. On departure day, we will return you to Kittilä Airport by 09:00, requiring departure from the hotel at approximately 08:15

Please contact your guide as soon as possible if your flight is delayed. 

From January to April, the Ylläs region experiences classic Arctic winter conditions with cold temperatures, reliable snowfall and a long snow season, creating exceptional conditions for cross-country skiing. January is typically the coldest month, with average temperatures ranging from approximately -16°C to -9°C (3°F to 16°F) and regular snowfall creating a true winter wilderness atmosphere.

February and March remain consistently snowy, with cold, crisp days and increasing daylight hours providing ideal skiing conditions across the forests and fells surrounding Ylläs.

By April, longer days and the first signs of spring arrive, with temperatures typically ranging between -7°C and 4°C (19°F to 39°F), while snow conditions often remain excellent for late-season skiing. 

Dining celebrates fresh Lappish ingredients and regional flavours, creating a relaxed experience inspired by the traditions and landscapes of Finnish Lapland. Seasonal produce and Nordic influences sit at the heart of the dining experience, creating menus that feel authentic and reflective of the surrounding region. 

Guests are exceptionally well catered for throughout their stay on a full-board basis. Breakfast is served each morning with a generous selection of options to prepare you for a day on the trails. Lunches are hearty and satisfying, while evening meals are served as a carefully prepared three-course experience, providing a welcoming and rewarding end to each day of skiing and Arctic adventure.

Vegetarian and vegan options are available, and most dietary requirements can be catered for, including gluten-free, dairy-free, nut allergies, shellfish allergies and egg-free diets. Please advise us at the time of booking so arrangements can be made with the hotel. Drinks are not included and can be purchased separately. Any additional snacks or refreshments during the day are at your own expense. 

The welcoming restaurant atmosphere creates the perfect setting to relax and refuel after rewarding days exploring the Arctic landscape. 

Activity level: Leisurely

Low pace, low pressure, but still physically active.

Our Leisurely holidays are ideal for beginners and those seeking a relaxed introduction to cross-country skiing. Days are taken at an unhurried pace, with regular coaching, frequent breaks and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Whilst these holidays place fewer physical demands on guests than our other experiences, cross-country skiing remains an active sport and you should expect to spend several hours on snow each day.

Skiing experience: Beginner

No previous experience required.

Beginner holidays are designed for guests who are completely new to cross-country skiing or have very limited experience. You will learn the fundamental techniques from the ground up, including balance, movement, climbing, descending, stopping and turning, within a relaxed and supportive coaching environment.

Luggage 

We kindly ask that you travel with a maximum of 1 piece of hold luggage and 2 pieces of hand luggage, as storage space in the transfer vehicle is limited. When packing for a winter holiday in the mountains, it is important to bring suitable clothing and equipment to ensure you remain comfortable in changing weather and snow conditions. 

Ski Equipment 

We will provide skis, boots and poles selected according to your height, weight, shoe size and technical ability, ensuring equipment is matched appropriately for comfort, performance and enjoyment throughout your holiday. 

Personal Equipment to Bring 

Please ensure you bring the following items for comfort during your holiday: 

Rucksack – A 15–20 litre day pack with waist and chest straps, suitable for carrying water, snacks and additional warm or waterproof clothing while out on the trails. 
1 litre water container – Please note that hydration system tubes can often freeze in winter conditions, so a standard water bottle or insulated container is recommended. 

Additional items 

Sunscreen, sunglasses, small thermos for hot drinks, head torch and footwear suitable for icy conditions 

General Clothing 

We recommend bringing suitable winter clothing to ensure you remain comfortable in changing mountain and skiing conditions: 

Jackets: Waterproof jacket, fleece or windproof gilet/waistcoat, and a down or insulated jacket (or an additional warm outer layer). 
Trousers: Nordic ski trousers that are lightweight, windproof, warm and ideally form fitting. Waterproof trousers are optional for additional protection. 
Tops: Long-sleeved thermal base layer and a lightweight long-sleeved fleece or mid-layer. 
Accessories: Two pairs of gloves (one lightweight and one insulated), over-mittens for colder days if desired, a warm hat, headband or buff/scarf, and medium-thickness socks. 

Your insurance responsibilities

These are described in detail within the Insurance Information. As an overview you must have adequate insurance that covers you for:

  • Medical expenses and repatriation in the event of medical need 

  • Mountain Rescue, apart from Norway where it is free 

  • Cancellation or curtailment of arrangements as a result of circumstances outside of your control (including accident or illness and inability to travel for other reasons) 

  • Personal accident risks, covering injury, illness or death

  • Personal liability 

  • Personal effects and money 

You must provide us with the name of your travel insurer, policy number and insurer’s emergency contact number 6 weeks before your holiday by updating the information in your account, which can be accessed via the members area of the website.

You should purchase insurance at the time of booking to protect payments made towards a trip that does not take place for any reason.

Our insurance responsibilities

Should Wildtrack Nordic become insolvent or cease to trade, your initial deposit and any other monies paid towards your trip are fully protected. Details of the policy and underwriter are included in the Insurance Information document.

Wildtrack Nordic does not have any responsibility to insure:

  • Your flights and any other travel apart from the free shuttle from and to the airport as part of your trip

  • Your belongings

  • Your equipment, if you are using your own

  • Passports: you will need a valid passport; many countries require 6+ months’ validity beyond your return date 

  • Visas: you will need to confirm the requirements early and ensure you have at least one blank page in your passport
